Marvellous Mammoths 13.08.09

17th August 2009

Visitors to Goodrington Sands were in for an unexpected surprise when they arrived at the beach one day during the summer holidays...

Children taking part in the ‘Marvellous mammoths' event run by the Geopark Education and Community Officer spent a busy afternoon measuring and building a life sized replica of an adult male woolly mammoth in the sand.

At approximately 5 metres tall and with tusks of a similar length, the woolly ‘sand' mammoth was an impressive sight and attracted lots of attention as people imagined what it would have been like to see them roaming around Torbay between 500,000 and 10,000 years ago.

The giant mammoth was completed in approximately an hour and a half with everybody working really hard to ensure that it was finished in time for a press photograph. The children then returned to the Seashore Centre and made their own pom-pom woolly mammoths to take home.

If you would like to learn more about mammoths and the Ice Age landscapes of Torbay, visit Torquay Museum and Kents Cavern.
