The Origins Dig Diary

3rd September 2009

3 September
Hello, my name is Liam Yates and over the past week I have been doing work experience with the English Riviera Geopark; which is closely related to Kents Cavern. I was invited to spend a day underground in the caves as part of the Origins Dig event.
I tagged along on the first tour, which gave an interesting insight into the place I'd be spending the day!

On the tour, you walk past the archaeologists undertaking the dig and considering the amount of stuff that has already been found it's amazing to realise that the dig area is only about 1m in width!

Later on in the day I was in the sorting tent sifting through the excavated material. It's quite a laborious task but everything needs to be put into the correct bags sorted by size so that the labs have an easier job picking out any interesting finds. Unfortunately the mammoth tooth that was reported to have been discovered was a piece of rock however whilst sorting we've managed to uncover a vast array of bones from small mammals such as voles and its mind boggling to think how old they might be. No luck with the Neanderthals today but at this rate anything's possible.
