GEOPARK BLOGThe Origins Dig Diary4th September 20094 September So far my experience of the excavation has been excellent as a volunteer and a student. I have gained as much knowledge as possible and have done most of the tasks I have been given. After working on a previous excavation and at Kents Cavern it has helped me to decide what period I want to study, the Palaeolithic (the Old Stone Age). I have learned it is not just the digging but also sorting through the cave earth to find the smallest bones that belong to voles and other small rodents dating from between 12-15,000 years ago. Many more exciting finds have been made today including a beautiful woolly rhino tooth. Today we had visits from the Royal Society, Oxford University, English Heritage and national media. The dig site is just off the showcave route and visitors to Kents Cavern are getting a great view of the area we are excavating. |
