The Origins Dig Diary

5th September 2009

5th September
Hi there everyone. My name is Abi Kirk and I am a Ma student from Lampeter University in Wales studying Social Archaeology. I have worked at Kents Cavern for five years now as a Ghost-Story Teller and scarier (sorry if I scared you, its my job title), and when I heard that Kents Cavern was to be excavated back in April, I jumped at this once in a life time opportunity.

I had previously been on the excavation back in April of this year and helped out with the excavation of trenches one and two. Trench One brought out a lot of interesting artefacts such as teeth from wolves, wild horse and cave bear. Sadly trench two was old spoil from a previous excavation. This year, however, the third trench is a lot more promising.

The area of trench three is thought to be a part of the cave in which no previous archaeologists have touched, and from the amount of fantastic artefacts that have come out of the cave is phenomenally interesting. Just today, we discovered two Woolly Rhino teeth, which were in-situ close together.

I was in the caves today helping Paul, and Mark by using the EDM (electronic distance measurer) which is used to pin point bones and such, which had been excavated in the trench by measuring the level in where they were found, which is very important.

My speciality in archaeology is Mediterranean Bronze Age and so yet again I was awestruck by the knowledge of how old these bones and teeth were, at least 30,000 years old. It is has been such a pleasure working with these lovely people, Keith, Beth, Paul and Mark and by watching and learning from them I have expanded my horizons on archaeology.

I cannot wait to see what the trench will reveal within the next upcoming week, and we all are waiting with breath that is baited on evidence to show hominids living in Kents Cavern all those years ago!
