GEOPARK ARTIST PROJECT - ANNA KELEHER Researching the Agency of Things + Talking With Things. Supported by the National Lottery and Arts Council England

5th January 2010

Things teach me actions

One of the best ways I know to experience prehistory is to participate in the ancient actions in the present moment. It really works for me and it has become important in my art practice.

I've gained insight into ancient lives and ecologies by making acorn bread, churning bog butter and making cheese with nettle rennet.

I first noticed how materials and actions melt time when I lived in Spain. The magic happened as I learned to mix and apply fresh plaster by hand using a traditional Valencian carpazo or round trug.  No one taught me how to do it, but when I got it right I had the odd sensation that I was at one with actions of the ancient plasters. It was an important moment.

And so it is with my Geopark project I'm experimenting with the potentials of Things both as a way to explore the past and as a fun way to experience the present. Thats it really.

So in RAT+talking with things you'll find me  chewing junco reeds to make twine, making pony hair tassels or weaving plants to make shoes.

I haven't deliberately set out to do anything its Things that suggest what I might do. I promise !!!

Things teach me things and I am grateful to them for that.
