SNOW AND ICE - FRIEND OR FOE?

Following imprints in snow left by the tiny feet of Rabbit people, Deer people and Lapwing people I journey in my mind to a time when these sheltered lands may have offered refuge from the fierce glaciations that have affected Britain over the past 100,000 years.

The current icy spell really helps me to imagine what the Geopark might have been like outside the relative warmth of our interglacial period. This weather is especially useful to me, as I'm planning an expedition to an ice age of the Quaternary just now; wondering how to travel, what kit I'll need and that kind of thing. So the chilly weather helps no end.... I love it, its friendly !

Have you ever reflected on the effects of snow and ice on all that is not snow and ice... I mean on things, ideas, artifacts. What actions, movements and behaviours are they responsible for, which artifacts, sports, landscapes, organisms, stories, cultures, foods, have they created or helped to create?
