GEOPARK BLOGGEOPARK ARTIST PROJECT - ANNA KELEHER Researching the Agency of Things + Talking with Things. Supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England18th January 2010WALKING BANANA PLANTS On Saturday my artist friends Helen, Alain and their son took me to meet Ali the head gardener at Torre Abbey Palm house. We are setting up some experiences for ourselves, Ali and the plants over the next year or so, which will be a lot of fun. Its not part of this project, but I'm telling you about it as I want to encourage people to visit the fantastic palm house in January while entry is free. Ali showed us a tall "Grandmother" banana plant whose dried flower is as big as a very fat dog. Apparently she reproduced in response to the lowering of the palm house temperature when Ali took over about a year and a half ago. To highlight the connection between reproduction and stress, Ali also showed us a huge mexican plant just outside the glass house that has literally thrown up handfuls of babies from its flowering stem in response to last years heavy frosts. I imagine there will be a good few babies born from this icy spell too !! Visit Anna's website here. |
