Know Your Seabirds - Berry Head NNR

9 Aug

Berry Head, Brixham

Learn more about seawatching and migrating seabirds, for keen or experienced birdwatchers. Trawlers regularly return from a day’s fishing in Lyme Bay during the evening sometimes with flocks of seabirds following them. Skuas, Shearwaters and Terns are all likely to be found among the gulls but identification can be tricky and local expert Mike Langman will pass on some of his 40 years’ experience of watching seabirds and indeed marine wildlife.  We will sit at the bottom of the quarry during this evening watch and Mike will tell you how to watch and what to look for whatever the weather. The evening light provides some of the very best viewing opportunities for passing seabirds at Berry Head, far better than the, often, silhouetted morning sightings, however depending on weather conditions views might still be distant. Berry Head is perhaps the best place in Britain for seeing the globally threatened Balearic Shearwater although a sighting cannot be guaranteed!
