Mammoth FREE Museum Weekend

15-16 Nov

Torquay Museum

As part of the Mammoth Appeal Torquay Museum is opening its doors for a fantastic FREE weekend. 

Join us for science and craft activities, talks and tours for all ages or just enjoy free access to the Museum.     

SATURDAY 15th November         

10am - 1pm Ice Age Time Team in Pengelly Hall  

Go back in time to when Mammoths roamed around where you live, try making a shelter for early man, see fascinating fossils and animal bones from Kents Cavern.  
Free.
Drop in.
All ages welcome.         

12 Midday - 12.40pm Museumologists  
Go behind the scenes with our Curator and see real poison arrows, spears and artifacts from around the world. Find out about what a museum really is and how objects from the past can teach us about how we live today.
Suitable for children aged 8-16.
Free, but numbers are limited so book on or before the day.

1.30pm - 2.30pm  In the Stores: Talk and Tour by Barry Chandle            
 A unique opportunity to go into the stores to see our social history and world culture collections.  Talk and tour by Collections Manager Barry Chandler, who has over 20 years of knowledge about Torquay Museum's incredible history. 
Free but limited spaces book in advance, suitable for ages 16 and over. 

2.30pm - 3.30pm, Queen of Crime Quiz  
Test your knowledge of Torbay's most famous daughter, Agatha Christie, her life and work. Come along early to swot up in the Agatha Christie Gallery. Quiz and social for adults.

SUNDAY 16th November 

10am - 1pm Make a Mammoth Mess!    
Lots of activities for children, including prehistoric puppets and a giant cave painting         to go on display in the museum!
Free. All ages welcome. Drop in. Aprons available. 

11.30am - 12.15pm Captain Caveman's Prehistoric Tour
Join Captain Caveman and go back in time to find out about early humans, how they lived and how they protected themselves from wild animals! See real flints, furs and fossils, and find out why all the objects we caretake from Kent's Cavern are so important.
Suitable for children aged 6-12
Free but spaces are limited so book a place. 

1.30 - 3.30pm Sketching Still Life  
Observational drawing session, using objects from Torquay Museum's collections,              including human and animal skulls, social history objects and textiles.  Led by artist Nathalie Palin, an opportunity develop your drawing and observation skills.  All materials supplied.   All welcome, whether you have lots of experience or none at all!
2 hour session, with break.
Free but places are limited so book on or before the day.
Suitable for ages 16 and over.  

2.00 - 3.00pm Catalogues and Conservation: Talk and Tour   
Talk and tour by Curatorial Assistant Claire Jones on the processes that go on behind the scenes, caring for collection items from local prehistoric bones to Egyptian artifacts,  from Victorian textiles to taxidermy. See examples of recently conserved items, find out about current conservation plans, and discover the enormous -library of over 200,000 objects that Torquay Museum keeps in store.  
Free. Suitable for ages 16 and over.
