Discover and explore the fantastic geology of Torbay. Altogether there are over 100 miles of beautiful footpaths to enjoy around the Riviera area.  A footpath runs along all of our 22 miles of coastline and is clearly signposted as part of the South West Coast Path. Please see our Geoevents page for guided walks.

Please remember the geology of Torbay is special, and all sites are protected by law.


English Riviera Geopark Leaflet  -
The new English Riviera Geopark Trail leaflet is now available from Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust visitor centres (Berry Head National Nature reserve, The Seashore Centre at Goodrington, Cockington Court and Occombe Farm) and from the Bays three Tourist Information Centers,Torquay Harbour, Brixham Harbour and Paignton Esplanade.

Follow the trail and travel through 400 million years of time.


Berry Head National Nature Reserve - 
A guide to its wildlife and history
 


Berry Head National Nature reserve is managed by Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust.  There are just over 200 National Nature reserves in England, each selected because of the special contribution they make to nature conservation.  This leaflet provides a guide to the geology, wildlife and history of the headland.  Two visitor centres on site provide exhibition material about the geology and other heritage features of the site.

Remember to Stay Safe

People following the trails and walks do so at their own risk so when out and about enjoying the Geopark always remember to stay safe:

  • Check the tide timetables before you go out (Tide times are available at the Seashore Centre at Goodrington Sands).
  • Stay away from the cliffs – rock falls can happen at any time, please do not hammer or dig at any site.
  • Keep away from cliff edges.
  • Wear sensible shoes and be prepared for any weather.
  • Always tell someone where you are going and how long you expect to be gone.





English Riviera Walks – 16 Walks in Torbay and the Surrounding area


This booklet provides a wonderful guide to walking throughout the bay, easy to follow maps show you the way whilst the text gives you the background information on the geology, wildlife and heritage.  The author John Risdon was born and bred a Devonian.  His love and appreciation of Torbay and Devon has developed over many years of studying and walking the country as a teacher and lecturer of geography, history and the environment.  For John, a major aim in his life is to pass on his knowledge of the area and inspire a love and respect of the landscape in others.

Saltern Cove Local Nature Reserve – A guide to its wildlife and geology


From ancient seas to modern rock pools…come on a 400 million year journey in just a couple of hours.  See mountains rise and fall, escape drowning in flash floods, bake in scorching deserts then cool down – if you dare – in a rock pool where its eat or be eaten.


Interactive Walks Through Time – Torquay

One of 57 walks in the British Isles specially devised by BBC experts and presenters in association with the TV series British Isles a Natural History.  A walk from Ansteys Cove to Hopes Nose ending at Kents Cavern, the oldest known human home in the UK.
