News from the GeoparkWoolly mammoths in Goodrington?16 Aug 2009Visitors to Goodrington Sands were in for an unexpected surprise when they arrived at the beach on Thursday. As part of the ‘Marvellous Mammoths' event run by the English Riviera Geopark and Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust, children measured and built a life sized replica of an adult male woolly mammoth in the sand. At approximately 5 metres tall and with tusks of a similar length, woolly mammoths would once have been an impressive sight roaming around Torbay between 500,000 and 10,000 years ago. Emily Beale, Geopark Education and Community Officer said ‘Explaining the past to young children can be challenging but doing an activity like this really brings the past back to life, even if it's only until the tide comes in.' In anticipation of another busy day at the beach, members of the Torbay Council Beach Team had kindly sectioned off an area large enough to accommodate the beast. If you would like to learn more about mammoths and the Ice Age landscapes of Torbay, visit Torquay Museum and Kents Cavern. This event was one of many regular family events happening throughout the summer at the Seashore Centre, a Gateway site for the English Riviera Geopark, which is run by Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust.
