Spring Festival Rocks the Geopark!

10 May 2011

This month sees the start of the annual Geopark Festival on the English Riviera the biggest collection of events on land, on water and even underground since the designation of the areas UNESCO-recognised Geopark status in 2007.

An exciting new leaflet details all the celebrations that will take place from 25th May until 5th June the perfect time to experience the stunning Geopark coastline and countryside in all its glory.

The festival is designed to give a wide range of visitors the chance to enjoy some really memorable life experiences that will leave a life-long love of the English Riviera. There are cultural events, such as Shakespeares The Tempest underground in Kents Cavern and the welcome return of the GeoTrio (last years musical storytelling sensation); adventure activities such as the brand new Geopark Geocaching similar to letter boxing but using GPS technology to find hidden treasures across the Bay; cruises out to sea on Greenway Ferries; and a range of learning and discovery packages, like prehistory pottery making at Brixham Museum and the opportunity for a sneaky peek behind the scenes at Torquay Museum. Lupton House near Churston is also opening its gates for a day of delights including star-gazing from the Italian Garden.

Nick Powe, chairman of the English Riviera Global Geopark (ERGO)said: The range of festival activities demonstrates just how diverse and appealing the Geopark offer is and what the Geopark is all about.  Ours may be the smallest of the 78 Geoparks in the world but the sheer number and quality of events and activities, some free, some fee paying, taking place during the festival week this year is fantastic.

Not only are local people being encouraged to participate but, this year, the festival includes events and activities designed to attract visitors from home and abroad to stay in the Bay and enjoy the outstanding natural beauty it offers.

As per usual, the Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust have put together a packed programme at their own sites, and for the first time ever have introduced, with support from the English Riviera Tourism Company and ERGO, a series of brand new Geopark Discovery Packages including the ultimate Geopark Thrill Seekers trip - coasteering and rock climbing on the Geopark coast from Ansteys Cove on 31st May and  the Canoe the Coves expedition on 2nd June.

The festival celebrations culminate in the finale event on 5th June at Cockington Court where, surrounded by Geopark pasties and the Geopark brew Beery Head, the English Riviera Geopark team will face the Jurassic Coast team in a game of cricket, vying for the Turf Cup. Much fun awaits!  So pick up the festival leaflet, its got all the details. Theres bound to be something going on for you.
