The People of Devon and Their Identity: From Palaeolithic Roots to Tourism

Hosted by Nick Powe DL, Chair of the English Riviera UNESCO Global Geopark

The English Riviera UNESCO Global Geopark is pleased to promote the Devonshire Association’s 2026 Presidential Symposium, led by its current President and Geopark Chair, Nick Powe DL. This year’s theme, “The People of Devon and Their Identity: From Palaeolithic Roots to Tourism,” offers a rich exploration of the county’s cultural evolution across thousands of years.

About the President

Well known for his leadership of Kents Cavern from 2000–2023, Nick Powe is the fifth generation of his family to oversee one of Europe’s most significant prehistoric cave systems—an iconic site within the Geopark and a cornerstone of scientific understanding of early human presence in Britain. During his stewardship, Kents Cavern achieved multiple national tourism awards, including Winner of Winners at the 2023 Devon Tourism Awards.

Nick played a central role in securing UNESCO Global Geopark status for Torbay and now chairs its management organisation. He also serves on the European Geoparks Network Coordination Committee and undertakes UNESCO evaluation missions worldwide. His wider civic contributions include serving as Chair of Torquay Museum, Deputy Lieutenant of Devon, board director of VisitDevon, and member of Exeter Cathedral’s Enterprise Board.

About the Symposium

The symposium examines how Devon’s identity has been shaped by its people, landscapes and changing socio-economic forces. Drawing on archaeology, history and cultural studies, speakers will trace a narrative from:

  • Palaeolithic hunter-gatherer communities
  • Roman and medieval influences
  • Maritime trade and migration
  • Industrial changes
  • The emergence and global significance of Devon’s tourism heritage

Together, these perspectives provide a cohesive story of how Devon’s distinct cultural character has formed and evolved over time.
